In today’s world, people expect more from their purchases, especially in sports. It’s not just about performance; it’s about authenticity, sustainability, and transparency throughout a product’s lifecycle. With upcoming EU regulations requiring Digital Product Passports (DPPs), Kadena grantee, Booomtag, is ahead of the curve. Booomtag’s DPPs lay the foundation for real-world asset (RWA) tokenization by anchoring each item to an immutable digital identity, enabling a digital twin of the physical product.

Solving for EU’s Upcoming Compliance Requirements

Starting January 2027, the EU’s Green Deal regulations will require a Digital Product Passport for every item in categories like consumer textiles and electronics. Eventually, all products except food and medicine will require some form of DPP data.

“Sports brands are far from ready,” said Rogier Dekker, Booomtag’s co-founder and CEO. “Unlike fast fashion, they produce across multiple categories: apparel, equipment, and accessories. Getting compliant is a real challenge.”

Booomtag’s solution helps brands get ahead. By building a standard across SKUs, they’re enabling brands to comply with upcoming mandates and do so with minimal disruption. “We’re working with OEM factories and, together with Kadena, are in talks with standard-setting consortiums to help define how DPPs work across sports,” said Guido Nuijten, Booomtag’s other co-founder.

Beyond Compliance: Consumer Utility

While compliance is critical, Booomtag’s real value lies in consumer experience. Each product includes a smart tag (Booomtag) that links to BooomConnect — a platform where users can register their item, prove ownership, and interact with the brand.

“You scan it, register it, and it shows up in your wallet,” said Dekker. “That’s where the story begins.”

In this wallet, you can:

  • View product information
  • Obtain composition and care info
  • Upload receipts for resale and insurance
  • Mark products as lost or stolen
  • Access safety instructions or emergency contacts
  • Participate in loyalty or rewards programs

Booomtag’s consumer-first approach boosts registration rates and creates new data streams for brands. “It’s not just about blockchain — it’s about creating reasons to scan, register, and engage,” Dekker explained.

For Brands, It’s a Game-Changer

Brands benefit from direct insight into who owns their products and how they’re being used. “We can show a snowboard brand that 20 of their boards are registered in Amsterdam and 200 in Colorado,” said Dekker. “We can even help them understand what other gear their customers own — whether it's surfboards, helmets, or a tennis racket.”

This opens up new strategies for an entire suite of blockchain-powered customer insights. It helps brands profile customer behavior and activate lifecycle services, including repairs, replacement parts, and upgrades. Furthermore, it also uncovers additional benefits that include fighting counterfeit markets. Overall, Booomtag’s product lifecycle technology will power the circular economy mechanics in a way that makes sense for brands and regulators alike.

A First-of-Its-Kind Integration

“We’re aiming to become the leader in the sports digital product passport,” said Nuijten. That mission begins with Harlem Kitesurfing, Booomtag’s early adopter.

Each item, from Harlem’s kites to kite boards, will include a DPP that records materials and authenticity on Kadena’s blockchain.

Harlem Kitesurfing’s founder, Alex Morgenstern, a blockchain enthusiast, plans to go even further by integrating affiliate marketing and sustainability data on-chain. But the current focus has been on launching a working proof of concept that leverages Kadena’s blockchain to issue signed Digital Product Passports — anchoring authenticity and product data immutably on-chain.

“It’s a major milestone,” added Dekker. “Our platform has been used successfully for over three years—but now, Harlem’s customers will be the first to engage with gear that’s not just registered, and its Digital Product Passport signed for on Kadena’s blockchain, creating a new standard of transparency and traceability from day one.”

Kadena: The Infrastructure Layer

Booomtag chose Kadena for its scalable, secure blockchain and smart contract language, Pact. “We were drawn to Kadena’s ethos,” said Nuijten. “Kadena’s team said something that stuck with us: ‘The end user should not know they’re using blockchain.’ That’s exactly how we’ve built our experience.”

With support from Kadena’s $50M grants initiative, Booomtag is building the infrastructure to issue GDPR-compliant Digital Product Passports and power real-time verification and traceability.

What’s Next

This month, Booomtag issued its first DPP on Kadena with Harlem Kitesurfing, signaling a new era for compliant, consumer-first products.

Next steps include:

  • Integrating wallet functionality for seamless onboarding
  • Launching Kadena SpireKey-enabled wallet creation
  • Activating loyalty, affiliate, and advertising modules
  • Supporting pre-owned marketplaces and rentals

“Consumers are ready,” said Nuijten. “They want transparency. They want accountability. And with Booomtag, we’re delivering it — on-chain, with zero friction.”

In the future, Booomtag plans to expand to sports clubs and their communities, extending to the authentication of collectibles and merchandise. Clubs can offer proof of authenticity and unlock new ways to engage supporters by anchoring limited-edition gear and memorabilia to a digital identity on-chain.
